Welcome to Generation Gap where we ask you about your favorite generation of a certain multi-generational car nameplate. Then, explain why your choice is right to the rest of us uneducated folks.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
While the 5 Series range featured last week is definitely one of the cornerstones of modern enthusiast culture, the 3 Series has arguably wielded even more influence, especially for those seeking European performance for slightly less coin. The only question is, which generation is best? This will definitely be a debated argument, especially between E30 to E90.
The options:
First Generation [1975 - 1981] E21
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Second Generation [1982 - 1991] E30
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Third Generation [1993 - 1998] E36

Fourth Generation [1998 - 2005] E46 and facelift
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Fifth Generation [2006 - 2011] E90-3 and facelift

Sixth Generation [2012 - Present] F30-1 and facelift

The E36 is the best! Especially since it includes the shoe, and the 318ti compact with the canvas sunroof, and of course the M3 sedan.

E30. Icon.
I’m old.
E36 is second place: it's just a Hugo Boss suit.

The E21 is cool, the E36 is a fantastic amount of car for the money right now, especially withe the M50 or M52, the E46 is one of the few modern BMWs I actually like, but the E30 just wins. They look the best, they have amazing aftermarket support, they’re the best built, they have some of the best looking interiors ever fitted to a car, and you can comically easily fit a V8 in them. There’s just something about them, even my garbage 325e had some spark to it that made me keep it for way too long.
My next car, I hope, will either be another E30, or an E28

I’d love to have one someday, but unfortunately all the ones in my area are either riced out or beat to shit. Perhaps an import is in the cards...

I still need to figure out a way to get myself into an E30 one of these days... M3 Sport Evo preferably.

This one, first gen I’m pretty sure. I saw this car in Bozeman Montana. Has super chunky tired on it and really awesomely worn paint. Probably one of my favorite 3 series’ I've ever seen

Good ones have gotten so expensive here that I’m leaning towards importing as well

A 325e is the only E30 I’ve ever driven, and even with the lumbering engine, and worn rolly poly suspension, it was still a fun car, not fast presise but fun.

That was pretty much mine, except the muffler also fell off and it liked to break down in some way every month or so. I need me one with a proper 2.5 M20, or the 1.8 even

Haha, I think that might be exaggerating a bit...after all, these are just for Oppo to get together and discuss cars for a while, but thanks for the positive feedback!

It’s a better idea/concept than a lot of the stuff they are putting out...

The US E21 was very unflattering due to the ‘Merica bumpers, and had terrible performance. I’m voting E21, but only because the Euro spec 323i looked way better, and had fantastic performance with a straight six:

The E92 M3 looks great and has an amazing engine, the E36 is the easiest to attain and one of the best to drive, plus the E46 is the best of both worlds and can be had in ZHP or CSL trim.
But I have to go with the E30. I have a personal connection with the car and it defines cool unlike any other 3-Series. It’s a predictable answer but one of my all time favs. That styling, that chassis, those engines. Just genius.

Like the 240 is to Volvo and the DS is to Citroen, the E30 is the symbol of BMW and likely for good reason.
